Lucknowi Chikankari embroidery is known as chikan ki Kadai traditional embroidery style from Lucknow, India. Chikankari is derived from the word Chakeen that means elegant patterns on the fabric which is a Persian word. The techniques of chikankari or chikan embroidery requires discipline and precision of detail in its formation. Consequently, this art cannot be replicated anywhere. Earlier it was done with white thread on muslin clothes. It's now done on a variety of fabrics, from chiffon, silk, cotton, muslin, georgette, and lycra cotton. Apart from wearable garments it is also done on various other things like curtains, bedsheets, table cloths, pillow covers and cushion covers.
Lucknowi Chikankari Embroidery is one of our favorite Indian embroideries, which is also called shadow work because it's traditionally been a white-on-white embroidery originally done on fine cotton cloth. The traditional Lucknow embroidery work involves creepers or floral motifs which are used either throughout the garment or in corners, include jasmine, rose, flooring stems, lotus etc.
There are at least 40 different stitches in chikankari of which nearly 30 are commonly used. They fall under the main categories of chikankari embroidery work - flat stitches, embossed stitches and the jalli stitches. Lucknow takes the pride of being the exclusive hub for the chikankari work.
